ABOUT US

Facing East Yoga is built on a foundation of the ancient and traditional practices of Patanjali's eight-limbed path of yoga. At Facing East there is a focus on cultivating deep awareness and connection in the body, mind, and spirit. Classes are not just about how well you may or may not be able to do a posture, we strive to go deeper than that.

We hold the traditions close and believe in living a yogic lifestyle but, we can also be a little rebellious at times. We are fun and light-hearted, but also disciplined, professional, dedicated, passionate, compassionate, inspirational, and hardworking. We firmly believe that a higher state of well-being, healing and living to ones fullest potential can be attained through a steady yoga practice.

We are passionate about extending the teachings of yoga and are ourselves dedicated practitioners and students of yoga for life. We take our yoga practice off the mat and into our daily lives. We encourage students to see the world from another perspective. We have the ability to help students grow in their yoga practice, and we motivate students to find their own inspiration from within. WHAT IS YOGA?

So what is yoga? - It is not a religious practice, it is a science of the mind.

What does that mean? - You know when you sit down to do 1 thing, 1 task, and your mind is suddenly reliving past events, planning your menu for an upcoming event, daydreaming, reorganizing your life in your mind, and on and on and on....

Yoga is a practice that helps us master our mind. Helps us be in the present moment. Helps us stay focused. You'll see us Yogis use various techniques to gain this mastery over the mind. The first one you will notice and be a part of are the asanas, or the postures. We are practicing putting our bodies through some challenges and seeing if we can stay present and focused. We also use the breath (pranayama) to keep us here and now. And you may even experience some chanting in your classes. The sound and vibration, the repetition of a sound also helps us stay in the moment. So when you think of yoga, think of it as a technique to control your mind, connect with your breathing, and focus on the here and now.
